The rights were set to expire at the end of 1992 and it’s been alleged he produced the movie to hold onto those rights a little longer. There’s an absolutely fantastic documentary about the debacle which you can rent or buy on Amazon called Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four, but the short version is that German producer Bernd Eichinger had the rights to a Fantastic Four movie. However, what truly stands out about The Fantastic Four is that it was an “ash-can project,” and was never, ever released. If it wasn’t for the use of some very shoddy Lawnmower Man-level CGI, you’d think it was made in the 80s.
Though the actors deliver some decent performances, the movie’s limited budget is in evidence, from the “Lego on a stick”-style stretching effects, to The Thing’s sub-par special effects make-up. It was co-executive produced by Roger Corman who, famed for his low budget productions, agreed to do it for a meagre $1 million. Sure, its story does the job, relating the origin of the Fantastic Four and setting them up to fight Doctor Doom, much as the 2005 movie did. Cast: Alex Hyde-White, Jay Underwood, Rebecca Staabġ994’s The Fantastic Four is an amazing tale, and I’m not talking about the movie’s premise.But we might be in store for Fantastic Four variants from a different universe for that movie. Separately, rumors tease a Fantastic Four appearance for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And if Watts is going to start work on Fantastic Four in the near future, then the cast announcement could be very close. Marvel will probably share news about the cast and release date for Fantastic Four well before production starts. Marvel has yet to announce who will play the MCU’s Fantastic Four. That said, if Watts is really going to direct Fantastic Four next, we’d expect Marvel to make a big fuss over it. Similarly, Marvel has started production on Quantumania. 3 is already shooting, even though the movie won’t launch until May 2023. But we’ll point out that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Again, it’s all relative given the Phase 4 delays. But if the report is accurate, then Watts will start working on Fantastic Four soon.
That’s not enough to spoil the Fantastic Four release date.
